Stainless steel linear bearings guide straight-line motion on round shafts or guide rods when the equipment also faces moisture, cleaning exposure, or corrosion risk. Unlike rotary ball bearings, these parts support sliding or reciprocating movement. The replacement decision should therefore start with the shaft, stroke, load direction, and environment, not only the bearing outside diameter.
Use this page when reviewing stainless linear bearing requests for clean machinery, packaging equipment, food-related guides, laboratory devices, inspection systems, and light automation. Related CXE Bearing categories include stainless steel bearings, food processing bearings, washdown bearings, and stainless bearing units when the same equipment also uses rotary or mounted bearing positions.
Where Stainless Linear Bearings Fit
Stainless steel linear bearings are commonly reviewed for guide shafts in humid, clean, or washdown-adjacent equipment. Typical positions include sliding guards, transfer mechanisms, filling or packaging guides, inspection fixtures, sample handling devices, and compact automation axes where rust on the shaft or bushing can interrupt smooth motion.
The bearing works as part of a guide system. Shaft hardness, shaft finish, shaft support, alignment, lubrication, and contamination protection are just as important as the bearing body material. If the guide shaft is worn or corroded, changing the bearing alone may not restore smooth motion.
Open, Closed, and Flanged Choices
A closed linear bearing surrounds the shaft and is often reviewed for shorter unsupported shafts. An open linear bearing is used where the shaft is supported along its length and the bearing must pass over the support. A flanged linear bearing can make mounting easier when the bearing needs to bolt to a plate or machine frame.
For replacement, confirm the old part form before ordering. A closed bearing usually cannot replace an open bearing on a supported rail, and a non-flanged sleeve may not replace a flanged version without changing the housing.
Selection Notes
Start with shaft diameter, bearing outside diameter, length, and housing style. Then confirm whether the bearing is open, closed, flanged, or installed in a block. Check stroke length and load direction, because long strokes and side loading can create shaft deflection or uneven ball contact.
Next, describe the environment. Stainless steel may reduce rust risk in humid or cleaned equipment, but seals, lubricant, shaft material, and cleaning exposure still need review. If the position is close to food or beverage equipment, compare the request with food processing bearings and state any lubricant or documentation requirements in the RFQ.
Common Buying Mistakes
- Ordering a linear bearing by shaft diameter only.
- Ignoring whether the bearing is open, closed, flanged, or housed.
- Replacing the bearing while leaving a worn or rusty guide shaft in place.
- Using a stainless bearing but keeping a shaft material that corrodes in the same environment.
- Failing to describe washdown, cleaning chemicals, or contamination near the guide system.
RFQ Checklist
For a stainless steel linear bearing RFQ, send the bearing model, shaft diameter, outside diameter, length, open or closed style, flange or block details, quantity, shaft material, stroke length, load direction, operating environment, and photos of the guide shaft. If the bearing binds, chatters, or wears quickly, include photos of the shaft and housing so CXE Bearing can review alignment and contamination risks.
