Technical Guide Materials, applications, selection notes, and internal reference links for this collection.
Stainless flange ball bearings combine two buyer needs in one part: a flanged outer ring for compact positioning and stainless material for improved rust resistance. They are often reviewed when a small bearing must locate in a plate, pulley, guide roller, instrument, or compact housing while also handling moisture, cleaning exposure, or humid storage better than a standard chrome steel flanged bearing.
For general flange-bearing selection, compare this page with flange bearings. If corrosion is the main reason for the change, also review stainless steel bearings, stainless miniature ball bearings, and AISI 316 stainless steel bearings before deciding only by flange size.
Why Stainless Plus Flange Matters
The flange controls location. It helps keep the bearing seated against a housing shoulder, panel, wheel, or roller body. The stainless material addresses corrosion risk. That combination is useful in compact equipment where a loose bearing position, rusted ring, or difficult assembly can create repeated maintenance problems.
A stainless flanged bearing is not the same thing as a full mounted bearing unit. It is usually a compact ball bearing with a locating rim. If the shaft needs a housed support, a pillow block, or a flange bearing unit, the mounting arrangement should be reviewed separately.
Common Applications
Stainless flange ball bearings are commonly reviewed for guide rollers, conveyor accessories, small motors, food-related equipment, packaging machines, medical or laboratory devices, instruments, lightweight automation, and compact wheel or pulley assemblies. They are especially useful where the bearing must be easy to locate during assembly and where rust on the bearing ring would be a problem.
For washdown or cleaning exposure, the stainless grade, seal style, lubricant, and surrounding material all matter. A sealed stainless flange bearing may help protect the rolling elements from moisture and particles, but the final choice still depends on cleaning fluid, shaft condition, operating speed, and load direction.
How to Choose
Measure bore, outside diameter, width, flange outside diameter, and flange thickness. If the bearing is used in a roller or pulley, measure the full component as well as the loose bearing. The flange may be critical to the way the part seats, so do not substitute a non-flanged bearing unless the housing design has been reviewed.
Next, confirm whether the bearing should be open, ZZ shielded, or 2RS sealed. Open bearings may suit cleaner applications where low drag matters. ZZ shields can help with light particle protection. 2RS seals may be reviewed for moisture or dust, but seal drag should be considered in small motors or low-torque assemblies.
Common Buying Mistakes
- Ordering by bore and outside diameter without checking flange dimensions.
- Assuming stainless automatically solves every washdown or chemical exposure issue.
- Replacing a flanged locating bearing with a standard radial bearing.
- Ignoring shaft wear or a loose pulley bore that caused the original bearing to move.
- Choosing 2RS seals without checking torque sensitivity in a miniature assembly.
RFQ Checklist
Send the bearing number, bore x outside diameter x width, flange diameter, flange thickness, seal or shield type, stainless grade if specified, quantity, operating environment, and photos of the bearing in the assembly. If corrosion is visible, include photos before cleaning the part so CXE Bearing can review whether the issue is material, seal, lubricant, fit, or exposure.
