Axial cylindrical roller bearings are designed for applications where the main load is axial and the bearing arrangement needs line-contact rolling elements rather than balls. Buyers usually review this collection when a machine position has thrust load, limited axial space, and a need to compare washer, cage, roller assembly, bore size, outside diameter, height, lubrication, and mating surface conditions.

This is not a general radial bearing category. If the load is mainly radial, compare cylindrical roller or needle roller bearings instead. If the application needs a simpler ball-type thrust bearing, a three-part thrust ball bearing may be the closer starting point.

Common Applications

Axial cylindrical roller bearings are often considered for heavy axial support in gearboxes, machine tools, presses, rotary tables, industrial drives, lifting equipment, and compact thrust positions where ball-type thrust bearings may not provide the preferred contact geometry. They can be useful when the design needs a separable thrust arrangement and the buyer must confirm the washer set, cage assembly, lubrication path, and mounting surface quality.

They are also used where axial stiffness matters and where the bearing seats can be prepared correctly. A thrust roller bearing cannot compensate for poor mounting faces, uncontrolled misalignment, or incorrect axial support. If the bearing failed from edge loading, surface damage, or heat, the surrounding shaft and housing details should be reviewed along with the bearing number.

How To Choose

Begin with the complete bearing designation if available. If the old bearing is separated into washers and a roller-cage assembly, keep all parts together during identification. Measure bore, outside diameter, total height, washer thickness, and any locating features. Confirm whether the assembly uses one or more shaft washers, housing washers, or cage-and-roller elements.

Selection pointWhat to review
Load directionAxial load direction, whether load reverses, and whether radial support is handled elsewhere
Bearing arrangementComplete thrust set, separate washer, cage assembly, or combination with another bearing
Mating surfacesShaft washer support, housing washer support, flatness, hardness, and shoulder design
LubricationOil, grease, lubrication access, relubrication interval, and heat removal
SpeedOperating rpm, duty cycle, thrust load, and temperature trend
AlignmentParallelism of support faces and risk of uneven roller contact
Space limitsBore, OD, height, washer thickness, and assembly sequence

For compact radial-load positions, needle roller bearings may be more relevant. For high radial load with shaft axial movement or locating/non-locating arrangements, review cylindrical roller bearings.

Material, Load, Speed, And Temperature Notes

Axial cylindrical roller bearings concentrate load through roller contact, so the surrounding parts matter. The washers or raceways need stable support. Housing faces should be clean, flat, and square to the shaft. If the bearing is installed between poor surfaces, the rollers may carry uneven load even when the bearing itself is dimensionally correct.

Speed and temperature should be checked carefully. Thrust roller bearings can generate heat when lubrication is insufficient, preload is excessive, faces are not parallel, or the load is higher than expected. Do not choose by outside diameter alone. The review should include axial load, speed, duty cycle, lubrication method, mounting accuracy, and whether the equipment sees shock or vibration.

Material choice should be tied to the environment. Chrome steel is common in protected industrial machinery. Stainless or special material paths may be needed if corrosion, moisture, or washdown is involved, but material changes should be reviewed with the full bearing design and operating conditions.

Useful related pages include cylindrical roller bearings for radial roller positions, needle roller bearings for compact radial or thrust-needle comparisons, three-part thrust ball bearings for ball-type axial support, and tapered roller bearings where combined radial and axial loads need a different arrangement.

RFQ Guidance

For an axial cylindrical roller bearing inquiry, send the bearing number, quantity, bore, outside diameter, total height, washer details, load direction, speed, lubrication method, and photos of each component if the bearing is separable. Include the application and whether the bearing works alone or as part of a locating/non-locating arrangement. CXE Bearing can then help review the product family and avoid selecting a radial bearing when the position actually needs axial support.
